Square’s Early Access Program for Tap to Pay on iPhone is officially over and the payment option is now available to all sellers in the U.S. using an iPhone and Square’s point of sale (POS) app.
Early access to Square’s iPhone Tap to Pay option started in June and participating sellers added the payment type without needing new hardware and found value in having the payment ability, according to a Wednesday (Sept. 28) press release.
Using Square’s iPhone Tap to Pay, mobile professionals like contractors and caterers, for example, got to process contactless payments onsite at their project location. Hairstylists and beauty professionals benefited from the speed and ease of taking customers’ payments right from their chairs.
Tap to Pay on iPhone uses Apple’s contactless payment acceptance capability within the Square POS app. Using just an iPhone and Square’s POS app, sellers can use the tool to take in-person contactless payments, PYMNTS reported in June. Early access to the program was launched with select sellers to enable them to start testing the new technology.
“Deploying Tap to Pay on iPhone has really enhanced the retail experience we’re able to provide our shoppers, in multiple ways,” said Franco Salerno, owner of Warrington, Pennsylvania-based Darianna Bridal & Tuxedo and an Early Access Program participant.
“Our young customer base would rather use their digital wallets or contactless cards, and rolling out Tap to Pay on iPhone has helped us meet our shoppers’ preferences with a convenient solution that also brings an air of sophistication to the buying experience. What’s more, given our store’s large footprint, we’ve been able to speed up purchases by bringing the checkout process to wherever our shoppers are,” Salerno added.
Square Head of Financial Services David Talach said Tap to Pay on iPhone brings retailers a fast way to start taking payments and processing transactions “from anywhere in the store or on the go without the need for a separate payments device.”
